This year, Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore has worked to transform and expand its services to the community. These efforts were clearly portrayed through the numerous achievements earned by the hospital and administrative staff, the first of which included CEO Gabrielle Finley-Hazle being named Woman of the Year. The Lauderhill Regional Chamber of Commerce recognized her for her extraordinary professional achievements and community contributions.
Another administrative leader was honored in spring when Dr. Edward A. Dauer, director of radiology and board member, was appointed to a special advisory panel of the National Academy of Sciences that evaluates the safety of airport security scanners across the nation. As a member, Dr. Dauer reviews how the Department of Homeland Security and equipment manufacturers estimate the level of non-ionizing millimeter wave radiation exposures that air travelers are exposed to.
One of this year’s major milestones was the opening of the new freestanding Emergency Center, which provides emergency and outpatient services for the residents of Davie, Plantation, Sunrise, Southwest Ranches, Cooper City and the surrounding community. The 13,626-square-foot center, located at State Road 84, is open 24/7 and offers the same capabilities as a traditional emergency room. It houses 11 treatment rooms and is equipped with advanced imaging technology, such as a state-of-the-art low-dose 128 slice CT scanner. The building also houses the Imaging Center of West Broward, which offers CAT scans, outpatient lab work, ultrasounds, X-rays and calcium scoring.
As a result of the hospital’s high level of care and ongoing efforts to educate the community on stroke prevention, Florida Medical Center received recognition in June as the 2015 Readers’ Choice for Stroke Hospital by City News Magazine. The hospital also earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite Plus, which recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized guidelines.
Florida Medical Center went on to achieve accreditation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) as a Comprehensive Center for bariatric surgery. This distinction acknowledges the hospital’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients.
Fall brought the launch of the minimally invasive valve surgery program with the leadership of Dr. Erik Beyer, a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon trained by the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and the Texas Heart Institute in Houston.
