Broward Health Coral Springs held their annual Half Marathon and 5KRace for Women’s Wellness—all in the name of breast cancer, with proceeds benefitting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund.
The event raised funds for women who cannot afford mammograms and proceeds go directly to patients’ needs. Since its inception, the fund has screened more than 2,000 women, of which 90 tested positive for cancer. These women are still alive today, thanks in part to the early screening made possible by the Lisa Boccard Fund and the additional services they received within the Broward Health system.
This year, more than $42,000 was raised and had a sold-out crowd with more than 3,000 participants, spectators, vendors, and volunteers.
The race, founded in 2006 by two Broward Health Coral Springs physicians, Dr. David Silver and Dr. Mark Shachner, began as a small 5K run on the Broward Health Coral Springs hospital campus. It has grown to include a half marathon thanks to a partnership with the City of Coral Springs.
