Broward Health has expanded its gynecology oncology program at its flagship hospital Broward Health Medical Center. The health system prioritized gynecology oncology when considering its strategic plans.
“When we evaluated our cancer data registry, it was evident that we were seeing advanced gynecological cancers upon diagnosis,” said Heather Havericak, CEO of Broward Heath Medical Center. “It was our mission to have experienced providers available to triage and screen these patients, offer cutting-edge clinical trials and to have minimally invasive surgery options for treatment.”
One of the first steps in building the program was the recruitment of gynecologic oncologists Brian Slomovitz, M.D., and Scott E. Jordan, M.D., who both started within the past year. The newly established practice for Dr. Slomovitz and Dr. Jordan is located adjacent to the Lillian S. Wells Women’s Health Center at Broward Health Medical Center. Dr. Slomovitz 
has more than 18 years in practice and specializes in endometrial, ovarian, and robotic surgery for gynecologic oncology and complex gynecology.
has more than 18 years in practice and specializes in endometrial, ovarian, and robotic surgery for gynecologic oncology and complex gynecology. “There is a tremendous need for enhancing gynecologic oncology care and providing advanced care options for our patients in Broward County,” said Dr. Slomovitz. “In addition to offering quality clinical care, we are further committed to our patients by providing clinical trials featuring immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Some of these trials are very competitive to have and Broward Health is the only site in Florida to have these available.”
As a lead investigator nationally and internationally, Dr. Slomovitz is working in coordination with the Research Institute at Broward Health to make these trials available to Broward Health patients. There are three clinical studies that opened in January 2021, including the GOG 3041/AstraZeneca, MK7902/Merck, and the GOG 3057/Seattle Genetics (SeaGen) trials that will introduce novel immunotherapies to women suffering from endometrial and cervical cancer. The first two trials focus on female participants with endometrial cancer while the third trial is on recurrent and metastatic cervical cancer.
Dr. Jordan specializes in cervical cancer and in robotic and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. He has been practicing medicine since 2012.
“As we build our program, we look forward to providing our patients with the best, most compassionate care possible,” said Dr. Jordan. “Once a patient is diagnosed with cancer, we plan for treatment alongside the patient – whether that is surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination. We utilize genetic testing and molecular tumor testing to personalize treatment plans.”

Whether it’s screenings for gynecological cancers, chemotherapy treatments at the infusion center or providing minimally invasive surgery for our patients at the Robotic Surgery Center of Excellence at Broward Health Medical Center, it’s all available in one convenient location.
“We offer a well-rounded approach that includes genetics, cutting edge clinical trials and minimal invasive surgical approaches,” said Havericak. “As we look into 2021 and beyond we want to be the destination for gynecological cancer and treatment.”
