Two dynamic groups of high school students recently came together to participate in a once in a lifetime experience at BCCs Challenge by Choice course located at Tigertail Lake. One of the groups, known as LIFT is a transitional program run by the League for the Hard of Hearing and funded through Childrens Services Council. All of the students are deaf or hard of hearing and participate in this program in order to improve their social and employability skills to help them prepare for their future. They met up with Cypress Bay High Schools Sign Language Club which is a group of hearing high school students interested in learning about American Sign Language and Deaf culture. All 30 participants progressed through a series of mentally challenging physical activities geared to expand their thinking. Throughout the day, both groups worked together to learn about the importance of communication, positive risk taking, and self esteem. By the end of the day the students learned that regardless of the language you speak or how you communicate, people can work together to achieve a common goal by thinking outside the box!
