Most days, the sole focus of those at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital is on the life-saving care needed by some of South Floridas most acutely ill newborn babies. One recent day, however, there was a shared spotlight, one that included recognition for those who have made a major commitment to improving the lives of local children and families.

The occasion was the completion of a significant phase of construction for the NICUs expansion and public acknowledgement of the $3 million gift given by The Wasie Foundation to help fund the project. Those in attendance were treated to lunch, where Memorial Healthcare System officials also saluted the Diamond Angels of the Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital Foundation for its $1 million pledge, prior to a visit to the NICU construction site. There, everyone donned hard hats and signed one of the buildings main support columns as a lasting reminder of the day.
Scheduled for completion in August 2009, The Wasie Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be a 64-bed facility that will feature 23 private rooms dedicated to serving the sickest babies and their families.
