Being a family caregiver, caring for a spouse, a parent or an adult child, is a daunting and oft times overwhelming task. Comments like “I never expected this” or “what am I going to do” are not uncommon among today’s caregivers. Guilt, anger and frustration aside, being an informed and educated caregiver will certainly go a long way in making life more tolerable.

Research what is available in your community. Talk to professionals and thoroughly examine your options; most likely you will find that there are programs, social services and possibly financial aid available.

While institutionalization is an option, it is costly, and flies against our desire to keep our loved ones at home for as long as possible. In home care is another option (also costly), but lacks the socialization and activity needed, particularly in the presence of physical or cognitive impairment. Adult Day Care is an excellent cost effective choice when compared to other less desirable alternatives.

A qualified and licensed Adult Day Care will not only afford the caregiver the respite so badly needed but also provide the participant with the mental and physical stimulation so often neglected. While caregivers may be reluctant to consider Adult Day Care (ADC) they will find that the benefits of the appropriate Adult Day Care Facility are far greater than any imagined disadvantages.

Make it a point to visit several qualified and licensed facilities in your community. By visiting several ADC’s you will be able to create a frame of reference as to programs and activities offered at each and ultimately make an informed decision. The selected Adult Day Care Facility should be able to demonstrate that it provides age appropriate socialization as well as programs that provide mental, memory and physical stimulation to the extent that the participant is capable.

By doing your homework and being informed, you will come to understand the true benefits of ADC and how ADC can help you in your caregiving role.
