There can be no doubt about Amy Eker’s commitment to the health and well-being of children.
In addition to nearly 20 years of pediatric nursing, much of it in the intensive care unit, she has fostered seven children, all of them medically complex or survivors of neglect, and adopted four of them. Eker and her husband also have three biological kids of their own. In all, the children range from three months to 24 years old, and include a set of twins. “We just want to help and make a difference,” Eker said.
For the past six years, Eker has served surgical services as the staff nurse in the pediatric recovery room. She says flexible hours are critical to juggling all her parental responsibilities, as is the support of management and co-workers.
The secret at home? “I’m very calm, organized, and we take it day by day. Also, coffee helps a lot.”
