February 2, 2024 – The HCA Florida Highlands Hospital team showed their support on National Wear Red Day, which is a day to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease in women. This national observance kicks off American Heart Month, which is recognized every year in February.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, and nearly 45% of women ages 20+ are living with some form of the disease. “It’s crucial for women to listen to their bodies and understand the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, because it isn’t always chest pain,” said Dr. Ganesh Athappan, an interventional cardiologist at HCA Florida Highlands Hospital. “Some other symptoms can include recurring pain, pressure, or tightness in the upper abdomen, arm(s), jaw, neck, or upper back, shortness of breath, cold sweats, indigestion, extreme fatigue, and even nausea/vomiting.”
