Barry University in Miami Shores welcomes the start of the academic year with newly designed health care programs that meet the needs of medical professionals and the South Florida community.
Beginning this fall, Barry’s Division of Nursing will offer the post-baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree to nurses who currently hold a BSN or an RN with a bachelor’s degree in another field. The DNP is a practice-focused doctorate, designed to prepare advanced-practice nurses as leaders and experts on health care programs, standards, and guidelines that reflect evidence-based research findings.
Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a Master in Science in Nursing (MSN) as well as the DNP. They will also be eligible for the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam or the Adult Acute Care Practitioner Certification Exam (ANCC and AANP). Students will attain the highest level of educational preparation and excellence in advanced nursing practice, as well as expertise in areas that support clinical practice, such as management and policymaking.In addition to its stand-alone master’s program in health services administration, Barry’s College of Health Sciences is also offering a two-year dual master’s degree in Health Services Administration and Public Health. This seven-semester program prepares health care professionals to confidently assume leadership positions amid constant changes in health care delivery, managed care, policy regulation, and a diversified consumer environment.
Also in the College of Health Sciences, the Division of Allied Health Programs is now accepting applications for its Master of Science in Clinical Biology, for clinical laboratory professionals interested in advanced study. Specializations are available in histotechnology and laboratory management.

Master’s degrees are available in: anatomy, anesthesiology, biomedical sciences, clinical psychology, counseling, health services administration and public health, movement science, nursing administration, nursing education, nurse practitioner (acute and family care), MSN/MBA, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, and social work.
Specialist degrees are offered in counseling and school psychology, while doctorates include the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (with dual MBA and MPH degree options), the Doctor of Nursing Practice, the PhD in nursing, and the PhD in Marital, Couple, and Family Counseling/Therapy.
For students seeking to enhance their health care management skills, graduate certificates are available in health care leadership; planning and informatics; and long-term care, medical group practice, and quality improvement/outcomes management.
Barry also offers pharmacy technician and EMT certification programs.

– Barry’s graduate program in anesthesiology is the largest and most established program in Florida for producing certified registered nurse anesthetists. The associate dean and program administrator, John McFadden, was recently named to the board of directors for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
