Philadelphia native Mindy Lofgren is a retired music teacher who has been volunteering at Broward Health Medical Center since January 2024. Lofgren volunteers twice a week, with one day always spent on the pediatric hematology-oncology inpatient unit, where she plays board games, paints or plays cards with kids.

“I love spreading joy around the hospital,” Lofgren said. “Some patients are in their rooms for days, and it’s rewarding to help them get a little distracted.”

The Margate resident also volunteers in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the hospital, where she is part of the cuddler program.

“Physical touch is crucial for NICU babies,” said Lofgren. “I also engage with our tiny patients by singing to them.”
