Miami-Dade AHEC was awarded a grant by Health Foundation of South Florida to provide the OrganWise Guys program to ten public elementary schools in Miami-Dade County. Through the grant funding, Miami-Dade AHEC will distribute over $30,000 in nutrition education materials to the ten schools and train teachers staff and food-service personnel on how to utilize and implement the materials. Miami-Dade AHEC will provide technical assistance and additional support to the schools over the year that the grant is conducted to facilitate program activities and help schools access additional resources related to nutrition, physical activity and healthy living.
The OrganWise Guys (OWG) program being utilized is a dynamic, interactive program that uses fun characters based on the organs of the body, along with high energy activities to teach children how to make positive health and fitness choices. The OWG program is the newest complement to Miami-Dade AHEC’s existing Preventive Health and Safety Education for Students (PHASES) program that has been offered completely free of charge to all Miami-Dade County public and private schools for the last ten years and that has given more than 160,000 children and adolescents (Grades 2-12), and their teachers, the tools to live healthier lives.
