The majority of people may think that being a nurse is simply helping people when they are facing health related issues. Others believe that the only tasks that nurses typically perform is to administer medicines prescribed by doctors, check blood pressure, pulse, temperature, etc. Nursing is not just about providing patient care. Being a nurse is a calling that comes from the heart, the soul, this feeling is very difficult to express with words. A patient’s smile, a simple “thank you”, a good outcome from a patient being treated by the nurse, a young child’s acceptance to be touched by a medical professional. These are affirmations that completely fulfill anyone that loves and is dedicated to the noble profession of nursing.
Nurses must combine their academic, theoretical, and practical knowledge and skills, with the art of caring, comforting, understanding, kindness, and teaching in order to provide the highest quality of patient care. Nurses must develop Critical Thinking Skills in order to think, reason, and act accurately and precisely in an open, logical, systematic, professional way, and with evidence based on knowledge to efficiently deliver the best quality care to their patients. Nurses must practice holistically; they need to see and understand the patients as a whole entity, human beings with physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. Patients are people with feelings, and nurses must continuously evaluate the dynamic environment around their patients, taking into consideration the factors that may be contributing to the health status of the patients and not just a diagnosed disease requiring treatment. Nurses are involved in promoting and maintaining health to patients, their families, and communities. Some nurses dedicate themselves to non-clinical functions as educators or researchers.
The nursing profession is a career that is in high demand in the educational field, however, not everybody that starts in the nursing career completes it. Not everyone who finishes actually works as a nurse if they do not have the dedication, commitment, calling, and what it takes to be a nurse. Again, being a nurse comes from the heart. Some people say that one must be born with the love of nursing, and in my case I agreed with this statement.
In summary, the nursing profession is more than helping a person in need. Florida National College applauds and would like to honor all nurses who are dedicated Health Care Professionals who have committed their lives to their patients and community with all of their heart and souls.
