Danielle Swagerty joined Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s ER in 2019 with a desire to help patients and families through life-threatening situations, and her motivation hasn’t changed in the years since then. That’s why even though she’s now the unit’s nurse manager, Swagerty still actively participates in emergency care.
“You have to have empathy and compassion for the patients and families, but still have thick skin,” said Swagerty. “It’s important to not only do your best in critical circumstances but then be able to shut it off. Because there’s always a next patient that needs your best.”
Swagerty’s desire to work with children may have come from her own experiences as a 20-year-old mom and the support she received from her own mother. “She’s a very smart and giving woman that always wants to help people. I try to be the same way for our patients and the nursing staff I manage.”
