“Obstetrics changed from being what I do to who I am.”
That’s Gessy Targete-Johnson’s summary of a 35-year nursing career that has been grounded in compassionate, evidence-based care for women and newborns. Her singular focus on the complexity and urgency of maternal-child health has been a north star for the director of Women & Infant’s Services at Memorial Hospital Miramar, a facility she helped open in 2005.
Targete-Johnson and her team focus on clinical excellence, safety and performance improvement at Memorial’s Family Birthplace, with a strong emphasis on outcomes. “My leadership is rooted in collaboration, staff development, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement,” said Targete-Johnson, who estimates she’s been part of more than 2,500 deliveries.
A career-long commitment to advancing women’s health, supporting families during critical moments and mentoring the next generation of nurses are among Targete-Johnson’s proudest accomplishments. “I found my calling,” she said.
