May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher or a BMI of 27-29.9, with at least one obesity-related comorbidity
- Weight-related health conditions such as metabolic syndrome, prediabetes or diabetes, high cholesterol, fatty liver disease or sleep apnea
- Difficulty losing or maintaining weight through diet and exercise alone
- Surgical readiness, defined as a BMI greater than 40 or greater than 35, with severe comorbidities
“We carefully tailor the program to each patient’s biology and lifestyle,” Schwimmer said. “Our multidisciplinary team works together to address the four pillars of metabolic health: nutrition, physical activity, behavior, and medical or surgical intervention.”

The clinic emphasizes a medical approach to obesity care, with a seamless pathway for surgical referrals to Tampa General Hospital in Tampa. The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center will support patients locally by managing both preoperative and postoperative care. The program also supports patients and referring physicians through coordinated care services, including assistance with prior authorizations and streamlined access to pharmacy resources.

In addition to serving as medical director of the TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, Schwimmer is a board‑certified gastroenterologist at the TGH Digestive Health Center, with both a personal and professional interest in treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He earned his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center’s Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Schwimmer also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.
Schwimmer is an active member of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastrointestinal Association and the Obesity Medicine Association. He has published in major medical journals and presented at national medical conferences on the treatment and management of inflammatory bowel disease and obesity medicine.
