The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) recently presented the 2012 Award of Excellence in Practice to Shakira Henderson, MS, MPH, RNC, IBCLC, for her excellence in clinical practice and continued innovation in the delivery of care for women and newborns. A research specialist at South Miami Hospital in Florida, Henderson has worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for four years. There, she developed and implemented an evidenced-based model of care for promoting and supporting NICU mothers who want to breastfeed. Since its inception, breastfeeding outcomes have more than tripled in the NICU.
