April 22, 2021  – Although dementia is often primarily associated memory loss, some who develop dementia will also experience loss of the ability to understand or express speech. On April 28, join the Alzheimer’s Association for “When Our Words Fail Us,” a free virtual program that will educate attendees on aphasia and how to cope with it.

As part of the Association’s ongoing “Ask the Expert Series,” the program will feature keynote speaker Marilyn Neil, a speech-language pathologist at Sarasota Memorial Outpatient Rehab Clinic. Neil will discuss the benefits of speech therapy for those with aphasia.

“Communication is our connection to the world,” Neil said. “Aphasia robs us of making those connections vital to our quality of life. The good news is that there is much we can do to minimize the effects of aphasia for significant periods of time.

“It’s hard work and it takes a commitment to lifestyle and behavior changes, but in my 30 years of experience, the value we gain from maintaining our ability to deeply connect with those we love is worth the effort to achieve these outcomes,” she continued. “Early intervention yields the best results when it comes to slowing down effects of aphasia – particularly aphasia that comes on slowly as a result of progressive illness.”

Following Neil’s presentation, Alzheimer’s Community Educator Amanda Tatum will share some effective communication strategies for those caring for loved ones with dementia.

Bernice Pelea, program manager for the Alzheimer’s Association, noted: “As dementia progresses, a breakdown in communication can often form a barrier between those living with dementia and their caregivers. With this program, we aim to help bridge the gap so that families can remain connected with their loved ones when words are no longer enough.”

“When Our Words Fail Us” will begin at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 28. Register by calling the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at (800) 272-3900 or by visiting
