February 8, 2023 – The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced the National Health Equity Grand Rounds, a quarterly virtual series to deepen understanding and shape discourse around health inequities and opportunities to improve the health of our nation. This series will be led by the AMA in collaboration with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (NCIPE) and RespectAbility.

Each session in the series lasts 90 minutes and will include fireside chats and moderated panel discussions. Keynote speakers and panelists will share expertise, ideas, insights, stories, and resources to advance equity and justice in health care. Topics will include racism in medicine, building equitable incentive models, diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices in medicine, and using data transparently to advance accountability to the communities we serve.

“The National Health Equity Grand Rounds will strengthen physicians’ and other health care professionals’ knowledge of public health and structural and social drivers of health inequities,” said AMA President Jack Resneck Jr., M.D. “By providing knowledge, evidence-informed strategies and tools such as shared frameworks and analyses, the National Health Equity Grand Rounds also seeks to empower physicians and other health care professionals to dismantle structural racism and intersecting systems of oppression as we strive for optimal health for all.”

The inaugural session, which was recorded on February 7 and is freely available to stream on the AMA EdHub™, was “History of Racism in U.S. Health Care: Root Causes of Today’s Hierarchy and Systems of Power.” In addition to Dr. Resneck, the session featured AMA Chief Health Equity Officer Aletha Maybank, M.D., M.P.H., Harriet A. Washington, M.A., Rupa Marya, M.D., and David Ansell, M.D., M.P.H.

Future sessions are as follows:

  • Follow the Money! Understanding the Structural Incentives for Inequity in Health Care and Beyond

May 9, 2023, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm ET

  • Academic Elitism: Exclusivity and Dominant Culture in Medical Education and Training

August 8, 2023, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm ET

  • Making the Invisible Visible through Data: From Racism, Neglect, and Exploitation to Transparency, Accountability, and Repair

October 10, 2023, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm ET

In 2019, the AMA established the Center for Health Equity to advance equity across all aspects of health care, including within the AMA itself. The AMA works to advance an organizational strategic plan unveiled in 2021 outlining five approaches to drive racial justice and health equity. One of those five strategies includes pushing upstream to address all determinants of health and root causes of inequities, which is the focus of the National Health Equity Grand Rounds series.

National Health Equity Grand Rounds sessions will be available virtually both live and asynchronously. Each education session is offered free of change and attendees are eligible for no-cost Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.
