Dr. David Krieger performed the innovative procedure at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center

July 1, 2020 – HCA East Florida’s Physician Services Group is proud to announce neurosurgeon David Krieger, MD, MS, FAANS, FACS is the first physician in South Florida to utilize a new device to treat degenerative disc disease, degenerative scoliosis and Grade I spondylolisthesis. The Mojave™ PL 3D expandable interbody system is the first expandable cage that allows for independent control of the anterior and posterior heights to aid in matching the fit of the implant to a patient’s anatomy, which can help treat these conditions. Three cases were performed last month at Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Aventura, Florida, utilizing both traditional open as well as minimally invasive approaches.

“Interbody spine fusion is a common procedure that involves inserting a device between spinal vertebrae, particularly in conditions where there is displacement of vertebral bodies, called spondylolisthesis,” explained Krieger, an Aventura-based neurosurgeon. “This device allows me to make special adjustments to the height and angle of the cage in between the vertebrae, which allows me to restore the curve of the spine to relieve pressure on nerve roots in an attempt to address my patient’s pain.”

Patients may consider spinal fusion after they have exhausted conservative treatment and particularly if their imaging studies shows spinal instability.

The height and angle of Mojave PL 3D™ can be adjusted in three different directions, allowing for a customized implant fit for the patient. The construction of the device lets it be inserted in a collapsed state, which allows for a minimally invasive insertion. This may help minimize the risk of damaging nerves, ligaments and surrounding tissue.
