IIDA’s South Florida Chapter Honors GS&P

Gresham, Smith and Partners, a leading multi-disciplinary design and consulting firm for the built environment, took home the Best of Healthcare 2016 title for its design of the University of Miami’s new Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at Naples during the International Interior Design Association South Florida Chapter’s first annual Bragg Awards.

“I congratulate our interior designers on this well-earned recognition,” said Luis Cano, AIA, senior vice president at Gresham, Smith and Partners. “Our team delivered a fully functional design that’s visually stunning inside and out and gives the client room to grow in place for many years to come. Bascom Palmer wanted an iconic, contemporary facility to reflect its industry-leading reputation and cutting-edge practices, and that’s exactly what they now have.”
The 21,200 square-foot patient care and ambulatory surgery center, which opened in 2015, serves as the flagship Gulf Coast location for Bascom Palmer’s internationally recognized ophthalmology practice. The state-of-the-art center has clinical space for the treatment of almost every known eye disease, including 20 exam rooms and eye lanes, a full surgical suite with two operating rooms, a photo suite, physician offices and an optical lab.
The design’s eye-catching aesthetic embraces the spirit of optic science by showcasing light and excellent views. Wood, bendable resin and glass create a blend of futuristic and classic design in the reception area with clear sight lines so the receptionist can easily direct visitors throughout the facility. Transparent glass paneling on the exterior allows natural light to fill the interior spaces, and a cantilevered patient drop-off area provides shade to the main lobby’s glass-enclosed two-story atrium, enabling visitors to easily locate the eye lane pods, nurse station and receptionist upon entry.
