Many times our IT firm meets with professional offices and we require access to their business domain account (companyname.com). We later find out that the office/practice used another firm to purchase the name. Unfortunately, now this outside firm owns and controls your company’s domain name. We cannot stress enough the importance of doctors and offices owning and possessing their domain names.

We recommend these accounts should always reside securely with a major registrar provider such as Go Daddy or Network Solutions etc. Outside vendors might try to convince you otherwise and emphasize the need for access to your domain account, but only you or your IT support staff should have such access and control. If a firm needs to point to a particular IP address etc., this should only be performed by your IT provider in conjunction with the outside contracted firm (IT will point the record wherever asked or specified).

Regaining control of your domain name can be frustrating, time consuming, and you will find yourself at someone else’s mercy. Make sure you purchase, own, and renew your company domain annually. Be aware of username and passwords for these accounts, so you control all access. If you part ways with a particular vendor, then you always have the option to change passwords thereby restricting any further access.
