The end of traditional pricing as we now know it, cuts in reimbursement to physicians, shrinking employer-sponsored health care plans, and consumers who are more cost-conscious are among the changes discussed by The Advisory Board Company’s Russell Davis at the recent Broad and Cassel Third Annual Health Forum. Held at the Seminole Hard Rock Café, the event attracted nearly 100 physician and health care professionals from throughout South Florida.
“Employers have more options today than ever before,” said Davis. “Payors want to make sure they hold on to the business, so they are willing to pursue more creative options.”
He discussed that employers are looking to providers to help coordinate care, and pointed out that in all areas of health care comprehensive care coordination services are becoming essential. He also talked about accountable care organizations (ACOs) and that more than half of Medicare ACOs are being run by physicians.
Mike Segal, the chair of the Broad and Cassel Health Law Practice Group, also covered the multitude of cultural changes taking place as part of the overall drive to reduce costs and increase the quality of care. He reviewed changing compensation structures and the various emerging delivery models, including a clinically integrated network, ACOs and medical homes.
“Today, while fee-for-service is still a standard in most of the country, things are changing fast,” he said. “Fee-for-service does not align incentives properly in today’s era of cost, quality and accountable care.”
Other speakers at the Forum included Broad and Cassel partners Doug Mannheimer of the Tallahassee office and Gabriel Imperato, managing partner of the Fort Lauderdale office, who moderated a panel discussion about clinical integration. Panelists were Dr. Jonathan Gavras of Florida Blue, Esther Surujon, CEO of Memorial Health Network, Dr. Hymin Zucker of Palm Beach ACO, and Christine Worthen, Of Counsel with Broad and Cassel.
