Broward Health Broward General Medical Center (BGMC) and Hispanic Unity, Inc., of Florida are working together to assist Broward County’s Spanish-speaking community obtain available medical financial assistance.
Established last year, BGMC’s M.O.P.E.D. (Medicaid Out-Patient Eligibility Department) is designed to navigate individuals who have medical financial responsibilities but do not have health insurance through the financial assistance application process. The collaboration with Hispanic Unity takes the program a step further by reaching out to potentially eligible patients at the Hispanic Unity Centers.
The M.O.P.E.D. program helps patients in financial need apply for assistance programs like Medicaid and other State and Federally funded programs, tax funds and charity care. The staff includes five financial counselors and bilingual English-, Spanish- and Creole-speaking employees.
“The process that we’ve established with Hispanic Unity is allowing them to screen their clients, assist with information and document gathering and schedule appointments so we can finalize applications and help these patients apply for the financial resources available to them,” said Martha Walsh, Broward General’s regional manager for patient access.
