Broward Health Coral Springs (BHCS) held a VIP ribbon cutting and open house to celebrate the upcoming opening of its Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and fully-redesigned pediatric unit.Approved by Broward Health’s Board of Commissioners during the March board meeting, the 5-bed PICU and the existing 21-bed pediatric unit at BHCS will specialize in the care of critically ill infants, children and teenagers. With this approval, the hospital will now be able to offer Level II PICU services to area residents, rather than needing to transfer patients in need of a higher level of care to the children’s hospital at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
The redesigned pediatric unit at BHCS has also been redesigned with the youngest patients and their families in mind to convey a soothing environment. Every patient room is themed with a different colorful sea creature showing empathy to each other through its eyes and body expressions. The idea is for the artwork to help make the overall hospital experience less traumatic by creating a caring atmosphere of compassion and security, known as “Art in Compassion.”
The PICU at Broward Health Coral Springs is set to officially open in mid-May.
