Broward Health Medical Center resumed medical diagnostic screenings and elective surgeries in early May. In addition to these services now available to the community, and although the COVID-19 pandemic continues, new treatments and technologies for a variety of conditions have been launched to enhance care and extend patient access for the South Florida community.

Broward Health Medical Center recently installed the Hologic Clarity HD 3D mammography system with the SmartCurve compression paddle at the Women’s Health Center.

“This new mammography system provides a more comfortable and accurate mammogram experience,” said Regional Manager of Radiology Judith Zavatsky. “We are also able to provide 3D guided breast biopsy, which enables us to biopsy the very small lesions being found with this superior technology.”

Also, in May, the first SpineJack procedure in Broward County was performed at Broward Health Medical Center. The surgery is an outpatient procedure and takes about 20 minutes.

“This is a minimally invasive procedure,” said Behnam Myers, D.O., and orthopedic spine surgeon. “The SpineJack elevates the broken bone like a car jack, and then we fill the area with a cement to hold in place. This allows for more alignment of the back and less chance of pain in the future.”

Broward Health launched the first OPTION clinical study on the Watchman FLX, with the first patients undergoing the implantation of the device on June 11, 2020. Broward Health Medical Center is the first hospital in South Florida to enroll patients for this national study that uses this second-generation Watchman device.

“This is a tremendous benefit for patients to protect them from having a stroke without being on an anticoagulant for the rest of your life,” said Ahmed Osman, M.D., Broward Health Physician Group. “This is a game changer for those patients who would otherwise have to be on an anticoagulant indefinitely with the additional risk of bleeding on injury since a lot of these patients lead very active lifestyles. This device also is successful suited to fit all anatomies as compared to the previous device.”

Broward Health’s mission is to provide high quality care to all those we serve. These new technologies further that mission while creating greater access to advanced care close to home.
