The Cerebrovascular Outpatient Center, a unique center providing a comprehensive approach for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for neurovascular patients, is now open at the Neurological Institute at Broward Health North Broward Medical Center (NBMC).

“The goal of our Cerebrovasular Center is to offer a comprehensive level of care for stroke patients and those at risk for stroke – beyond the inpatient setting,” said Cheryl Tombo, director of NBMC’s Neurological Institute.

The Center offers pre-operative stroke risk assessment and risk reduction strategies for patients at high risk of stroke during or after surgery. The Center’s staff of RNs, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists provides comprehensive management of stroke patients. And the addition of Ridwan Lin, M.D., a board-certified stroke and interventional neurologist, to the Comprehensive Stroke Center staff will bolster services.

Two new types of advanced technology being used at the Center are the FDA-approved Merci Retriever® and Penumbra System®. The Merci Retriever® is a corkscrew-shaped device designed to remove blood clots from large vessels. The Penumbra System® is a tool that uses vacuum suction to grab blood clots in the brain for treatment of stroke.
