History was made on Sunday, May 6, when patients moved into the new Homestead Hospital located on Campbell Drive and SW 147 Avenue. The event marked the closing of the original Homestead Hospital that opened in 1940 at 160 SW 13 Street, and the first time a new acute-care hospital has opened in Miami-Dade County in three decades.
Guests entered the new Homestead Hospital through the large rotunda at the grand opening celebration. More than 7,000 people attended the community open house.
Using 15 ambulances and two medical vans, a team of nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals helped move 98 patients from the old hospital to the new one in four hours. Planning for the patient move took more than one year of planning.
“All of our patients were moved safely into their beautiful rooms at the new hospital,” said Bill Duquette, CEO of Homestead Hospital. “We are proud to offer the same high quality care we were known for at our old hospital in a brand new facility.”
The new Homestead Hospital is three times the size of the old one. It has all private patient rooms and more space for diagnostic services. With soothing colors, natural lighting and large open spaces, the new Homestead Hospital is designed to create a warm and welcoming environment.
Digital mammography and breast MRI are among the new services offered at the new hospital. There are 16 critical care rooms and 23 rooms for new moms and babies in the Birthing Suites. The 44 private rooms in the Emergency Center double the capacity of the old ERs 22 curtained cubicles. The new hospital also has six operating rooms, including two reserved for C-section deliveries, compared to three operating rooms at the old facility.
