Doreen Yaffa to serve as co-chair

Cheryl Van Hare, physician assistant, joins the Alzheimer’s Association® as the 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer’s event chair in Boca Raton. She is joined by co-chair Doreen Yaffa, founder of Yaffa and Associates – Marital and Family Law Attorney’s.

“I’ve been involved with the Boca Raton Walk to End Alzheimer’s for six years," Van Hare said. "Sadly, my mom passed away in 2012 after years of decline due to dementia— I was very involved with her care. I heard about the planning committee in 2014 to start a walk in Boca Raton— I was all in, and there’s been no looking back. I have been involved in various roles each year, and am excited to chair the event this year.”

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. Walk participants will complete a two-mile walk and will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.

"I am passionate about Alzheimer’s disease— about educating the public and increasing awareness, about raising funds to support those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, and for research to find an end to this disease,” Van Hare said. “This year, I hope to accomplish these goals by reaching out to the community and growing our Walk to new heights so one day we’ll have a world without Alzheimer’s.”
The Boca Raton Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place Nov. 10, 2019 at Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton. More than 3,000 people from the Boca Raton area are expected at this year’s event to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease.
“We are looking forward to an incredible 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer’s season in Boca Raton under the amazing leadership of Cheryl and Doreen,” said Audra Afflitto, executive director of the Southeast Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. “As the Southeast Florida Chapter continues our work in serving over 500,000 constituents and their families living with the disease, we are extremely grateful to all of the hardworking volunteers like Cheryl and Doreen, who are helping to expand our community footprint and bring us closer to a cure.”

In the United States, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. It is the sixth-leading cause of death and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
