January 22, 2020  – Cleveland Clinic Weston has launched a multidisciplinary Sarcoma Program to manage and treat patients with benign bone and soft tissue tumors. Specialists in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Center and the Maroone Cancer Center will collaborate to develop treatment plans designed to provide the best possible outcome and improve quality of life for patients.

“We are excited to launch this new program that brings together specialists who are experienced in the care of complex, challenging tumors,” said Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, MBA, President of Cleveland Clinic Weston. “As a quaternary and tertiary care medical center, our highly specialized medical team is committed to working together to tailor treatment plans to meet each patient’s needs and goals.”

Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma Program is headed by Jorge Manrique, MD, a specialist in musculoskeletal oncology as well as hip and knee replacement surgery.

Dr. Manrique earned his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. He completed a clinical and research fellowship in adult joint reconstruction at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an orthopaedic oncology clinical fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. (Click here for additional details about Dr. Manrique).

“We are pleased to offer patients with bone and soft tissue tumors the opportunity to be treated with the latest technology and improve their quality of life,” said Dr. Manrique. “Patients tend to have better outcomes when they receive coordinated care at a center with highly trained specialists from different disciplines. We look forward to providing our patients with compassionate care in one convenient location.”

Sarcomas, which are relatively rare, are cancers of the bone and soft tissue and can affect anyone at any age. They can be found anywhere in the lower or upper extremities and need special attention from initial diagnosis to treatment. Masses in the extremities should be evaluated by a sarcoma specialist such as an orthopedic oncologist or a member of a sarcoma medical team.

Specialists in Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma program also treat patients who have cancer that has metastasized to the bone. These patients require special attention to avoid fractures and reduce the impact by the disease.

Cleveland Clinic Weston’s Sarcoma program brings together orthopedic and general surgeons, medical oncologists, musculoskeletal radiologists, pathologists, and plastic surgeons who are experts in treating a variety of sarcomas.
