April 11, 2019 – William Kernan, PharmD, MBA, Director of Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic Weston, has been named a 2019 Fellow by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The ASHP Practitioner Recognition Program recognizes pharmacists who have excelled in pharmacy practice and distinguished themselves through service and contributions to ASHP.
Kernan oversees the pharmacy services for Cleveland Clinic Florida which includes inpatient services, an outpatient pharmacy, two oncology infusion pharmacies, an ambulatory surgery center, and multiple surgical and medicine clinics. He has received numerous accolades such as the Florida Society of Health System Pharmacy (FSHP) Meritorious Service Award, FSHP Recruiter of the Year Award and Florida A&M University’s Preceptor of the Year Award. In 2007, he established the Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY1) program, an ASHP accredited, one-year, post-graduate program to advance the practice of pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic Florida and the South Florida community.

Kernan received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University and completed a PGY1 residency at University Medical Center (now UF Health Shands) in Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to becoming the Director of Pharmacy at Cleveland Clinic, he was a board certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist serving as the critical care pharmacist. He is currently the President-elect of FSHP and serves as the vice chair of ASHP’s section advisory group on leadership development. He served as the Chairman of the FSHP Political Action Committee from 2017-2018 and on the Board of Directors for the Florida Society of Health System Pharmacy (FSHP) from 2014-2017. He has also served twice as President of the Southeast Chapter of FSHP and has chaired the Florida Residency Conference Steering Committee.

ASHP has recognized 22 of its members in the 2019 class for their practice leadership with the designation “Fellow of ASHP” (FASHP). Members who have achieved this prestigious honor have successfully demonstrated sustained commitment or contributions to excellence in pharmacy practice for at least 10 years, contributed to the total body of knowledge in the field, demonstrated active involvement and leadership in ASHP, and have been actively involved in and committed to educating practitioners and others.
