Columbia Hospital is proud to announce the recipients of the 2006 First Humanitarian Award honoring an employee and a volunteer.
Ian Usher, Laboratory Director, was honored for securing donations of money, food, supplies and toiletries for residents of his homeland, Belize. He has remained close to his home village, Belmopan, and through numerous goodwill missions his efforts have helped many communities devastated by floods in the area. In addition, Ian was first to volunteer his time and know-how to help members of his own staff rebuild after hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 while his own home suffered major hurricane damage.
Leona Stephenson was the Columbia Hospital volunteer selected in recognition of her outstanding dedication and assistance to the hospitals Physical Therapy Department. In addition to helping out at Columbia Hospital, she takes a bus to the Veterans Hospital and helps feed patients there. Leona does not drive and never complains about waiting for buses to transport her to locations where she so willingly donates her time.
