Critical Care intensivist Douglas Portillo, M.D. (left), talks with patient Estuardo Lorenzana at the recent Critical Care Champions Dinner at Baptist Hospital. Lorenzana, a patient in critical care for more than one month, attended the dinner with former patients who were reunited with the doctors and nurses who cared for them during their long stay in the hospital. Former patients who are chosen as “champions” are those who were critically ill and were considered having a high risk of dying, but survived against the odds. In a situation unique in life, the intensive care setting creates strong bonds between the patient, their family members and the caregivers.
