July 8, 2019 – The Board of Directors of the Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) is pleased to announce that Dr. Antonio Mesa is the new President of the Association.  Dr. Mesa is the first Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) to serve as President of the oldest county medical association in Florida. Dr. Barbara Montford, Immediate Past President of the DCMA, expressed her confidence in Dr. Mesa’s leadership during the Presidential Inauguration.   “He will continue to work on the plan initiated over the past year to transform the association and benefits we offer physicians in our community” commented Dr. Montford.

Dr. Mesa plans to develop a meaningful quality rating system for physicians. He commented, “All too often, patients are provided with a multitude of quality ratings that often bear no relation to the care actually being provided by the physician. Patients need something they can rely on.”

The second goal is to transform Miami Medicine into a Medline searchable scientific journal. “South Florida is a major metropolitan area and Miami is a world class city. This community deserves to have a medical publication for our physicians and scientists to publish their research and experience treating our uniquely diverse population”.

Dr. Mesa also plans to continue to work on medical staff assistance for our members and the stress management and behavioral health educational programs for law enforcement officers that were started under the leadership of Dr. Montford.
Dr. Mesa is a well-recognized neurologist subspecialized in pain management. He is the first neurologist in Florida to complete the interventional pain management fellowship in anesthesiology. He is a member of First Choice Neurology (FCN), the largest neurology practice in the country, and he serves on the Board of Performance Medical Management, the practice management organization for FCN. He also served as the Medical Director of the Pain Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital and was appointed Voluntary Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Neurology at the University of Miami.

At the conclusion of his acceptance speech, Dr. Mesa thanked all of the supporters of the event including; The Doctors Company, St. George University, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, North Shore Medical Center, Mutual of Omaha, University of Miami, Florida Blue, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.  He also thanked his colleagues, DCMA Board Members, and all of the attendees for accepting the challenge of taking the DCMA to next level within organized Medicine.
