The University of Miami School of Business Administration will bring together an estimated 700 people on March 21, 2016, for a daylong conference on the globalization of health care. The conference, The Business of Health Care: Going Global, is the fifth in an annual series of premier health care impact conferences hosted by the School’s Center for Health Sector Management and Policy. It will explore topics such as global integrated health care systems, global health and social responsibility, international finance, mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures in health care, and medical tourism, among other industry areas.Speakers and other participants include David Barash, MD, Executive Director, Global Health Portfolio and Chief Medical Officer, GE Foundation; Julio Frenk, MD, President, University of Miami; Patrick Geraghty, Chairman and CEO, Guidewell and Florida Blue; Bob Kerrey, Former U.S. Senator and Governor, Nebraska; Managing Director, Allen and Company and Executive Chairman, Minerva Project; Freda Lewis-Hall, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President , Pfizer; and Renée-Marie Stephano, President and Co-Founder, Medical Tourism Association, among others.
“All business is global and the business of health care, which impacts all of us, is certainly no exception,” said Steven Ullmann, chairman of the School’s Department of Health Sector Management and Policy. “This year’s conference will be a wonderful opportunity to share ideas on how we can best meet the new opportunities and challenges that have arisen from the globalization of health care, from medical tourism to globally integrated health care systems and more.”
The conference, presented by Florida Blue, draws professionals from across business and government. Attendees include those working within the industries of health care, health care delivery and health care policy and administration, as well as business leaders and other professionals in the finance, technology, legal, marketing, government and public policy, and academic sectors.

The annual health care conference is among a number of health sector initiatives undertaken and programs offered by the University of Miami School of Business Administration. Others include an Executive MBA in Health Sector Management and Policy program, which the School has offered for more than 35 years. Classes are held one weekend per month and bring together physicians, health care administrators, nurses, and other experienced health care professionals reflecting the microcosm of the health care industry. The program teaches practical administrative skills as well as broad strategic and theoretical perspectives to professionals who seek to expand their knowledge of management and administration as applied to the health care industry.
