Dr. Alwyn Leiba has been named interim president of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Medical Campus. He began his journey at MDC years ago as a student at the Medical Campus and later returned to teach. Throughout his tenure at the college, Dr. Leiba has held various pivotal roles, including associate professor, chair and most recently dean the School of Health Sciences, where he successfully implemented numerous allied health programs to meet critical workforce demands. In his current capacity, Dr. Leiba is dedicated to fostering student success through personalized attention, transformative learning experiences, and enhancing overall student engagement.

His extensive leadership extends beyond academia, notably as the first African American president of the Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association and South Florida Dental Hygienists’ Association. He also serves as chair of the Association of Florida Colleges Healthcare Education Commission. Dr. Leiba holds a doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Northcentral University, an MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Management from American Intercontinental University, a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene from Saint Petersburg College and an associate in Dental Hygiene from MDC.

His professional accomplishments include becoming a Fellow of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and completing the MDC President’s Leadership Academy. Recognized for his outstanding contributions to healthcare leadership, Dr. Leiba received the Champion in Healthcare award from the Global Innovative Foundation in 2024 and was honored by the ICABA World Network in 2022 as part of their ICABA Salutes Men who Lead initiative. He was also the recipient of the 2021 Legacy Magazine Black Leaders of Today and Tomorrow Award.
