Mehmet Oz, M.D., M.B.A., an internationally known cardiac surgeon and bestselling author, received the 2008 Lois Pope LIFE International Research award during a special ceremony at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

Oz is vice-chair and professor of surgery at Columbia University. He also directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and his research interests include minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complementary medicine and health care policy.
Oz has authored more than 400 original publications, book chapters, and medical books and performs over 300 cardiac surgeries every year. He helped develop the LVAD, or left ventricular assist device, which helps keep a patients failing heart beating while they wait for a donor heart to become available for transplant. Oz is considered a “Renaissance” man of cardiac care as his practice combines traditional medicine with holistic approaches such as hypnosis, music therapy and acupuncture.
