Benefit raised funds for substance use prevention while spotlighting importance of family time

 March 18 2022 – To underscore Hanley Foundation’s belief that “family time is time well-spent,” the 27th Annual Family Picnic took place on Sunday, March 6 at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach. More than 220 supporters joined event Chairs Kelly and Joe Rooney and Ann-Britt and Christian Angle for a family-filled day of fun. The Honorary Chairs were Abigail and Hampton Beebe. All event proceeds will go toward substance use prevention programming throughout Florida.

 During the afternoon, families enjoyed a gourmet lunch on the Croquet Center’s terrace and endless activities including lawn games, magician, candy station, balloon artist, 360 photo station, croquet, putting green and a petting zoo. In addition, Ryan Wertepny, Chief Program Officer at Hanley Foundation, announced this year’s Alcohol Prevention Poster Contest winner. Katherine Ledsome, a senior from South Tech Academy was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

“At Hanley Foundation, we know that the best thing we can do to help keep our children safe from drugs and alcohol is to spend time with them,” said Turner Benoit, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Hanley Foundation. “Imagine a world free of addiction – we do. Hanley Foundation is leading the way, changing the conversation and the stigma associated with this horrific disease. Through education, prevention, advocacy, and treatment support, we make a difference.”

The luncheon also included a one-of-a-kind silent auction for children only, where kids got their chance to bid on fun items exclusively for them. There was also an adult silent auction that included jewelry, sports memorabilia, tickets to local attractions and many more items. The afternoon ended with an ice-cream sundae bar for dessert.

“Our main focus in prevention is to reduce underage drinking and to delay the age of first use,” said Jan Cairnes, CEO for Hanley Foundation. “The goal is to stop addiction before it even starts. Last year, Hanley Foundation provided more than $4.1 million in prevention and education services in Florida, positively impacting the lives of more than 35,000 students, parents, teachers, caregivers, and community members across the state. We know that prevention works and appreciate all of your support. And a special thank you to Kelly and Joe Rooney and Ann-Britt and Christian Angle for their leadership this year.”
