Despite the years of controversy over whether a leader is born or made, leadership as an art reigns over leadership as a science. It is explicit traits, characteristics, distinguished behaviors and continued education and training. These traits and characteristics are perfected over time and life experiences continue to fine tune them to harmonious results. The leader in someone can be witnessed as early as childhood.Have you ever spend time in a playground and observed children as they play? You hear from a distance, as you look at the children going up the stairs and down the slide, one kid say “hey follow me.” Or even another kid say “look at what I can do, can you do this?” The followers follow the leader up the stairs and mimic what the leader is doing.
In the current job marketplace it is extremely difficult to retain talent and much more difficult to find stellar talent. The solution is to discover the leaders among your own pool of staff and bring them forward to lead. Change is inevitable and occurring at warpspeed especially in today’s dynamic healthcare arena. Time is of the essence and training unwilling and/or unable staff members to become leaders is not an option if one wants to stay ahead of change.
If a golden key can open any door. Then top executives need to find their golden key. Placing your golden key to lead departments that influence the patient’s experience will result in top box HCAPS scores and safe patient care with the highest quality outcomes.
