Florida International University College of Nursing and Health Sciences (FIU CNHS) celebrated 30 years of nursing at the college on October 12, 2012 with a celebration luncheon and nursing summit to discuss “30 Great Ideas to Transform Nursing.” Nearly 400 guests were welcomed by the CNHS Dean Ora L. Strickland, PhD, DSc (Hon), RN, FAAN, who ardently spoke of the growth and continuing advancements made by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Dean Strickland applauded college students, alumni and faculty as a vibrant, dynamic force within the nursing community at FIU and in the South Florida community, and highlighted outstanding college achievements, including the college’s pioneering role in simulation education for clinical instruction with the remarkable “STAR Center” (Simulation Teaching And Research). She also spoke of the college’s stand-out role in advancing diversity and cultural competency in nursing education and practice, and community engagement initiatives with multidisciplinary partners, such as the Green Family Neighborhood HELP program spearheaded by the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in conjunction with the disciplines of nursing, social work and law.

FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg addressed the crowd, noting that more than 9,000 of FIU’s nursing alumni have touched the lives of countless patients in health care facilities throughout South Florida and beyond.

Event moderator Christopher Dudley, chair of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee and CEO of Advancement Associates, highlighted some notable moments in nursing from 30 years ago, including the establishment of National Nurses Week, before introducing Keynote Speaker, Patricia Ford-Roegner, RN, MSW, FAAN, a health policy consultant in Washington, D.C. and former CEO of the American Academy of Nursing.

Roegner kicked off the nursing summit agenda with a discussion on the future of nursing, updating the group on the Institute of Medicine’s landmark report and recommendations on The Future of Nursing, and how nursing professionals can take a leadership role in breaking down barriers that hinder them from fulfilling their full potential and scope of practice. She then joined the panel for a working session on “30 Great Ideas to Transform Nursing,” moderated by Dr. Sheldon Fields, Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs and Health Policy at the FIU College of Nursing & Health Sciences. In addition to Roegner, panelists included Rosa M. Gonzalez-Guarda, PhD, MPH, RN, CPH, Assistant Professor, University of Miami School of Nursing & Health Studies; Nola Holness, CNM, APN-BC, PhD(c), Certified Nurse Midwife, Jackson Memorial Hospital; and Barbara Lumpkin, RN, BS, Government Relations Consultant, Baptist Health South Florida.

The group discussed transforming nursing in order to solve various problems within the healthcare industry, focusing on the areas of Nursing Education, Nursing Research, Nursing Practice, Nursing/Health Policy, and Nursing Leadership Development.

A lively discussion between the audience and panelist ensued, where a number of current issues in nursing and healthcare were brought to light, such as diversity in the workforce, compassionate care in the field, and finding ways to allow nurses to achieve full scope of practice in their profession.

A broad spectrum of South Florida organizations and individuals provided generous support to make possible the FIU College of Nursing & Health Sciences 30th Anniversary of Nursing celebration and summit, including Citrus Health Network and MCCI Medical Group.
