Florida International Universitys Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) program has been successfully educating healthcare leaders since 1972. Faculty in the Department of Health Policy and Management accomplish this goal by creating an academic environment that encourages the development of professionally prepared, ethical leaders with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage todays dynamic healthcare industry. The program emphasizes the practical applications of the concepts and theories of management within healthcare settings. In addition, emphasis is placed on critical thinking, self-development, communication and teambuilding skills, problem-solving competence, and ethical leadership.
The MHSA program draws students from diverse backgrounds and professional experiences that broadens the educational experience of the graduate students and promotes development of professional networking. In addition, the Healthcare Executive Student Organization (HESO) provides a venue for students to become integrated into their profession, prior to graduations, by organizing a guest lecture series, social/networking events with MHSA alumni, co-sponsored educational programs with local professional organizations, job shadowing opportunities with healthcare leaders, and various community events. Cohort-based with conveniently scheduled classes The MHSA program is designed for the convenience of the student while at the same time fosters learning at an accelerated rate. The student learns based not only on text, case studies, and other readings but with the sharing of information through the online interchange of information and research within a cohort-based model. The curriculum is presented in a structured, course sequence — permitting students to complete the didactic part of the curriculum in 24 months of uninterrupted study. At the start of the Fall and Spring semesters, students join a cohort of approximately 25 students in size; and remain in the same cohort, taking three classes per semester by attending alternating weekend on campus class sessions. This cohort-based approach allows students to support one another and participate in collaborative learning experiences. At the conclusion of the didactic part of the curriculum, students may elective to complete an administrative residency or research project.
