December 15 2021 – Today, the Florida Department of Health (Department) announced the 2021-2022 grant awards for 17 projects, totaling over $4.6 million, to support research leading to the prevention of or cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Funding is provided through the Ed and Ethel Moore Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program that supports research for better prevention, diagnosis, treatments, and cures for Alzheimer’s disease.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating brain disease that affects approximately 6.2 million Americans, including more than 580,000 Floridians, over the age of 65,” said State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo. “These funding awards provided by the State of Florida are critical to improving the health of Floridians by supporting research on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and bring us closer to finding a cure.”

“This cycle of research applications shows how hard our Florida researchers are working to unravel the mysteries of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Leilani Doty, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Grant Advisory Board Chair. “Among the funded research grants are three consortiums. These consortiums will receive support to enable researchers from different Florida universities to collaborate on issues relating to 1) misinformation and exploitation, 2) the microbiome impact on the brain, and 3) confronting the Alzheimer’s-related health challenges of the underserved.”

The following institutions submitted applications that were awarded research grant funds:
• Florida Atlantic University
• Florida State University
• Mayo Clinic Florida
• University of Central Florida
• University of Florida
• University of Miami
• University of South Florida
The research grants were awarded through a peer-reviewed, competitive process based on recommendations by the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Grant Advisory Board. Researchers at any university or research institute in Florida are eligible to apply.
