Every summer, the Florida Medical Association (FMA) Annual Meeting brings together physicians from every corner of the state, a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when the house of medicine speaks with one voice. Delegations from county medical societies, specialty societies, and academic institutions convene to shape policy, discuss challenges, and reaffirm our collective commitment to advancing the practice of medicine and protecting the physician-patient relationship.
As President of the Dade County Medical Association (DCMA), I am proud to have led one of our dedicated delegations within the South Florida Caucus, one of the most dynamic regional groups represented at the FMA meeting. Our active participation is not only essential—it reflects our deep responsibility to the diverse, complex healthcare landscape of South Florida. We are the voice of one of the most populous and medically active counties in the state, and our involvement ensures that the priorities of our physicians and patients are front and center in statewide advocacy efforts.
This year’s FMA meeting will be held in Orlando and include an impressive slate of events and policy discussions. Through reference committees, we will examine and debate a range of physician-submitted resolutions, each aimed at guiding the FMA’s legislative, regulatory, and organizational agendas. From combating scope-of-practice expansions that threaten patient safety, to supporting meaningful medical liability reform and protecting reimbursement for care, the issues at stake are critical to the future of our profession.
The FMA Resolutions Handbook, a collection of proposals distributed in advance of the meeting, reflects the concerns, innovations, and shared wisdom of Florida physicians. It serves as a living document, driven by grassroots involvement and reviewed through a transparent process, allowing every voice a chance to shape policy.
A highlight of the meeting is the annual Good Government Lunch, a highly anticipated event that brings together medical professionals and influential voices in Florida politics and healthcare. Speakers offer candid insights into the legislative process, healthcare trends, and the value of organized medicine’s advocacy. Events like these underscore the need for physicians to remain engaged not only clinically, but politically, to ensure our patients’ interests are protected.
We are witnessing a time in medicine when physician-led leadership is more necessary than ever. The FMA Annual Meeting exemplifies what can be achieved when we collaborate—not only as clinicians but as leaders, advocates, and policymakers. I commend the tireless work of the FMA, the strength of the South Florida Caucus, and the enduring commitment of the DCMA delegation for representing the values of our profession with integrity.
Let us continue to grow our delegation, strengthen our voice, and ensure that South Florida’s physicians remain at the forefront of the conversation. We are stronger together, and the future of medicine in Florida is counting on us.
