Memorial Regional Hospital South, in Hollywood, has established a Geriatric Fracture Program, designed to improve the care of the fragile, elderly fracture patient.
The program specializes in caring for seniors who have broken a hip, knee, leg, ankle, foot, shoulder, arm, elbow or wrist. From the moment a patient arrives at the emergency department, he or she will receive priority access through a streamlined admission process. If surgery is necessary, the program’s team takes over, preparing patients for their operation within 24 hours and scheduling the procedure with a highly-skilled orthopedic surgeon.
By helping patients resume physical activity as soon as possible, the Geriatric Fracture Program minimizes the likelihood of complications such as blood clots. As a result, physical therapy usually begins as soon as the day after surgery. Occupational therapy is available as well, if needed. Memorial Regional Hospital South’s Rehabilitation Institute is onsite for those who need extended inpatient rehab services.
