Since the New Year has rolled in we all have well intentioned resolutions that usually run the gambit of lose weight, be healthy, exercise and, of course, get our finances in order. Oprah Winfrey puts it, “Cheers to the New Year and another chance for us to get it right.”

Yes, we have this desire and eagerness to change our unhealthy habits but with so many options, what do we choose? Let’s see … there’s, eating a high protein low carbohydrate diet, a vegetarian plan, or eating intuitively, is listening to your bodies cues of hunger, then eating and stopping when full. Another strategy is enjoying foods together to maximize their nutritional benefits. Research shows certain foods become healthier for us when eaten in combination, such as, tomatoes and olive oil. Oh, decisions, decisions!

Why not turn to the experts? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (www.eatright.org) annually celebrates their “National Nutrition Month.” The March 2012 theme is “Get Your Plate in Shape.” This campaign encourages us to eat lean, baked, or broiled meats, more whole grains, more fruits and vegetables, choose a variety of foods, add more physical activity, and watch our portion sizes. Sounds sensible and really supports all the above options. The “Get Your Plate in Shape” campaign also supports the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA’s (www.usda.gov/) new initiative, “MY Plate,” helping everyone be more mindful of the foods we are eating.

It’s never too late for us to change to healthier eating habits and to become more fit. It is always best when you choose an expert for help like a Registered Dietitian and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for guidance.

Another great local resource is “Make Healthy Happen Miami,” (makehealthyhappenmiami.com) an initiative sponsored by the Miami Dade County Health Department (dadehealth.org), the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, and partner’s agencies.

Let’s all get it right this year and make our 2012 resolution to be productive to boost our heath, our nutrition and become fit and most of all to "Get Your Plate in Shape!"
