November 30, 2021 – HCA Florida Healthcare, Florida’s leading provider of healthcare services and part of HCA Healthcare, is announcing plans to build three new acute care hospitals in Gainesville, Fort Myers and adjacent to The Villages. The state’s leading collaborative care network currently serves 6.4 million patients each year at more than 400 sites of care across Florida, including its current 47 hospitals.

These new, state-of-the-art hospitals will enable HCA Florida Healthcare to offer patient-centered, high-quality care to more Floridians, who rely on it for their healthcare needs. In addition, more people will have access to HCA Florida Healthcare’s advanced treatments, innovative technologies and experienced care teams.

HCA Florida Healthcare will expand its presence in Gainesville with a new 209,595 square foot acute care facility on Archer Road. The medical center previously announced a freestanding emergency room (FSER) to be built on this site, with construction beginning in 2022 and completion scheduled for 2023. The new hospital will offer 90 acute care patient beds for intensive care, medical/surgical and inpatient rehabilitation. The new hospital will also include advanced operating rooms (ORs) and will be capable of additional expansion in the future.

The new hospital near The Villages will expand our presence at the Trailwinds freestanding emergency room. Approximately 172,588 square feet will accommodate a range of service lines, including cardiology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, GI and oncology. The three-story facility will include 60 beds, 54 of which will be medical/surgical. The hospital will also include four ORs, six intensive care beds, a cath lab and an emergency room to service the growing population of this master-planned retirement community.

The new Fort Myers hospital will expand critical access to a rapidly expanding population, centrally located on Colonial Boulevard. At 275,870 square feet, the four-story facility will accommodate an emergency room with two trauma rooms, a 16-bed intensive care unit with a 24-bed step-down unit, 54 medical, surgical and telemetry patient rooms and a women’s services unit with six labor and delivery rooms, a C-section OR, a nursery and room for future expansion. The hospital, yet to be named, is planned to open by 2025.

“Each of the three new hospitals will provide patient-centered care and clinical excellence to areas with vibrant, growing communities,” said Chuck Hall, president of HCA Healthcare’s national group. “As we continue to launch the statewide HCA Florida Healthcare brand, these expansion plans come at what is already an exciting time for all of our colleagues across the state.”

On Nov. 15, the organization opened HCA Florida University Hospital in Davie, Fla., and 10 additional facilities in Florida adopted the new HCA Florida Healthcare brand, signaling their connection to the state’s leading collaborative care network. The brand will visually unite more than 400 hospitals, freestanding emergency rooms, physician practices and other sites of care as part of the same family delivering compassionate, high-quality care across the Sunshine State. By spring 2022, all HCA Florida Healthcare sites of care will officially adopt the new brand.

HCA Florida Healthcare has a long history of investing in Florida to effect positive change, including a major capital investment initiative of approximately $3 billion spent over the last three years. This includes the $360 million HCA Florida University Hospital and existing facility renovations across the state to accommodate new, state-of-the-art equipment. As a tax-paying entity, HCA Florida Healthcare has also supported local communities with more than $957 million in state taxes over the past three years.

In 2020, the Florida network provided nearly $836.6 million in uncompensated care, gave $2.29 million in charitable contributions and invested significantly in innovative technologies and facilities across the state. Additionally, HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues spend thousands of hours each year volunteering in communities where they live and work and raising funds for many worthy organizations as part of a shared mission to care for and improve human life.

“The size, scale, resources and strength of HCA Florida Healthcare benefits all Floridians, wherever they are throughout the state,” said Hall. “We look forward to being able to provide care to even more of our neighbors once these new hospitals are completed.”
