November 21, 2022 – HCA Florida Westside Hospital, a 250-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, is pleased to announce it has completed its first elective Trans-carotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure.

The minimally invasive surgery was completed by HCA Florida Healthcare vascular surgeons Dr. Rafael Bustamante and Dr. Kelechi Akuma and took less than 10 minutes.

“The TCAR is unique in that it temporarily reverses the patient’s blood flow away from the brain,” said HCA Florida Healthcare vascular surgeon Dr. Rafael Bustamante. “During the procedure, a small incision is made on the neck, just above the collar bone and a stent is placed inside the carotid artery, before normal blood flow is returned.”

The surgery is considered minimally invasive.

“Less invasive procedures mean there’s typically fewer risks of complications for patients,” said HCA Florida Healthcare vascular surgeon Dr. Kelechi Akuma. “Patients typically return home faster, experience a speeder recovery and get back to their normal routine more quickly.”

TCAR patients commonly benefit from a reduced risk of experiencing a stroke. “HCA Florida Westside Hospital has evolved into an award-winning facility recognized for providing a wide array of services to the residents of Broward County,” said HCA Florida Westside Hospital CEO Barbara Simmons, RN. “We are continuously expanding and adopting the latest technology, enabling us to always provide leading-edge services to the population we serve.”
