Experts from all over the world will address health care delivery challenges amid the coronavirus outbreak, a volatile U.S. election year and the rising cost of care

February 11, 2020 – The University of Miami Patti and Allan Herbert Business School will hold its ninth annual health care impact conference on March 27, “The Business of Health Care: The Social, Political & Economic Determinants of Health,” at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center. Health care industry and government leaders from the United States and around the world will discuss the impact of socio-economic trends, public health emergencies and U.S. electoral politics on health care access, services, costs and outcomes — both domestically and globally.

“This conference brings together industry leaders, including heads of leading U.S. medical and insurance associations, at a time when global health threats such as the coronavirus and the future of U.S. health care reform are at the center of public discourse,” said Steven G. Ullmann, director of Miami Herbert Business School’s Center for Health Management and Policy, the event organizer.

“A major goal of this conference is for business, government, providers and payers to explore innovative ways to address the increasingly complex social, political and economic challenges shaping health care today,” Ullmann added.
In previous years, this conference has attracted close to 1,000 national and international industry leaders, policy makers, scholars and students. Heads of the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, American Nurses Association and America’s Health Insurance Plans, among other leading industry groups, will serve as keynote panelists.

A session moderated by Dr. Julio Frenk, president of the University of Miami, will feature ministers of health from the Americas. Additional speakers include Pat Geraghty, president and CEO, Guide Well Mutual and Florida Blue; Brian C. Castrucci, president and CEO, deBeaumont Foundation; Jay Wohlgemuth, senior vice president and chief medical officer, Quest Diagnostics; and Rajeev Venkayya, president, Global Vaccine Business Unit, Takeda.

The conference is presented by Florida Blue, with Boston Scientific and VITAS Healthcare serving as chairman sponsors. For a complete list of speakers and online registration, visit www.bus.miami.edu/healthcare2020.
