Bringing awareness of environmental impacts on health

April 17, 2023 Healthcare Network’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Corin DeChirico completes the Climate for Health Ambassadors Training Program. The training equips health professionals with the knowledge, hands-on experience and resources to speak about, act on and advocate for climate solutions that affect underserved and vulnerable communities. As a Climate for Health Ambassador, Dr. DeChirico is authorized to present information on climate and health impacts and advocacy strategies on climate solutions.

The impact of climate change affects everyone, however underserved communities are the hardest hit. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Healthcare Network works to improve access to care for all, especially vulnerable individuals and families. At-risk groups such as children, seniors and patients with multiple chronic conditions are the most impacted and suffer most from health-related issues due to air pollution, poor water quality, natural disasters and an increase of disease-carrying insects caused by rising temperatures.

“I recognized that the environment plays a critical role in health. Leading Healthcare Network through a pandemic and natural disaster opened my eyes to disparities that affect health. Many of our patients are among the most impacted populations by environmental factors yet they have the least control over climate effects,” said Dr. DeChirico. “Being an ambassador means I can advocate for the voiceless.”

Climate for Health is a national initiative led by a diverse network of health leaders from across the health sector representing key health care, public health, clinical and medical institutions and associations. Founded by ecoAmerica, Climate for Health offers tools, resources and communications to demonstrate visible climate leadership, inspiring and empowering health leaders.
