August 15, 2022 – In advance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Holy Cross Health is participating in the national study of Patient Reported Observations on Medical Procedure Timeliness for Breast Cancer (PROMPT) Research for patients who have undergone breast cancer treatment.

The aim of the study is to understand the patient perspective on timeliness of breast cancer diagnosis and first treatment during a public health emergency and to examine how timeliness of breast cancer diagnosis and first treatment vary by facility and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on timeliness of care. The study is conducted with

Jessica Burgers, MD

National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) sites, of which the Michael & Dianne Bienes Comprehensive Cancer Center at Holy Cross Health is one.

NAPBC represents a consortium of national, professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast.

To qualify for the PROMPT research study, a woman must be over 18 years of age and has been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer within the last two years.

PROMPT is a completely voluntary study. Those who choose to participate will provide information about their personal health history and complete an interview about their experience via Zoom. The feedback they provide will be used to evaluate the timeliness of medical care and procedures for breast cancer. Those who are selected and complete the entire study will receive a $100 gift card.

“Waiting can be the most difficult part after an abnormal test. As a breast specialist, I am always striving to shorten that waiting period for my patients,” said Jessica Burgers, MD, who specializes in breast surgical oncology at the Michael & Dianne Bienes Comprehensive Care Center at Holy Cross Health. “With this study, the aggregated data across multiple NAPBC sites will be used in facilitating a timelier diagnosis and initial treatment plan with the goal of providing patients, both locally and nationally, a superior quality of care.”

The NAPBC-accredited Michael & Dianne Bienes Comprehensive Cancer Center at Holy Cross Health offers disease-specific care in all oncology sub-specialties including medical, surgical and radiation oncology. NAPBC accredited centers must demonstrate a multidisciplinary, team approach to coordinate the best care and treatment options available; have access to breast cancer-related information, education and support; provide breast cancer data collection on quality indicators for all subspecialties involved in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment; provide ongoing monitoring and improvement of care; and offer information about clinical trials and new treatment options. Holy Cross Health was among the first 200 in the country to receive this accreditation. Holy Cross underwent a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with the NAPBC standards.
