Centennial Celebration

Mary “Eileen” Helms

Just two months into the new year, Mary “Eileen” Helms has survived COVID and a stroke. Today, there was another reason to celebrate the Broward Health Medical Center patient. She turned 100. Her family says her Jan. 23rd birthday celebration had to be postponed when she tested positive for COVID. So, a month to the day after her birthday, Broward Health Medical center nurses and doctors hosted a surprise birthday party. (Feb. 23)

Eileen, who lives part-time in Naples, was in town on Feb. 22 to visit vacationing relatives when she had a stroke. When she arrived to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, the physicians had mere minutes to provide her lifesaving tPA medication used to treat a stroke.

One day later, she is alert and grateful to celebrate her birthday with the hospital staff and her family who was in town. Her attending physician expects her to recover fully following physical therapy.
